Coast Guard museum reopens after renovations

NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) — A museum at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy is reopening to the public this weekend following a yearlong renovation project.

A redesigned exhibit at the U.S. Coast Guard Museum provides an overview of the guard from its earliest days to the present.

At Saturday's ceremony the academy's superintendent, Rear Adm. Sandra Stosz, will present a Purple Heart to the family of a Coast Guard officer who died from wounds received in action during World War I.

The museum in New London was established in 1973 holds roughly 6,800 artifacts on the history of the Coast Guard.

The $300,000 renovation project was completed with support from the academy and the Coast Guard Department of Governmental and Public Affairs.
