Coast Guard's Eagle heads to Conn. after repairs

BALTIMORE (AP) - The Coast Guard's tall ship Eagle is heading home to Connecticut after spending four months being repaired in Baltimore.

The three-masted barque, the largest tall ship flying the U.S. flag, left Baltimore on Wednesday for its home port at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn.

The Baltimore Sun reports the training ship for academy cadets underwent a $5 million refurbishing in a Curtis Bay dry dock that involved everything from a new coat of white paint to replacing hull rivets and restoring the three-quarter-ton gilded wooden eagle under the ship's bowsprit.

The 295-foot ship won't be gone for long. The ship is scheduled to return to Baltimore in June as part of the War of 1812 Bicentennial Commemoration and Operation Sail 2012.
