GROTON, Conn. (AP) — More than 100 sailors assigned to Naval Submarine Base New London are being adopted by families around the area for Thanksgiving dinners.

Officials say the program gives sailors an opportunity to connect with the local community, including some who will be away from their families for the holidays for the first time. The adopt-a-sailor program is overseen by the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation department at the base.

Barbara Glass of Mystic has been hosting sailors on Thanksgiving for the past 10 years. Two members of her family served in World War II and she has a son serving as a military pilot in Virginia. She says the sailors she hosts are always appreciative.

Families around southeastern Connecticut host sailors on Thanksgiving and Christmas through the program.
