NEW LONDON, Conn. (WTNH) -- There's an update on an effort to move a historic New London home and save it from demolition.
When News 8 first told you about the effort to save the historic house in New London, volunteers had just started taking it apart. Now it's almost completely down, but they're still less than half way done with the project.
It may look like they've made a lot of progress since we last saw the historic house in New London.
The whole front section, the original part of the house has been painstakingly taken apart, but it still needs to be reconstructed somewhere else in the city.
"It's an 1829 Greek Revival," said Armand Beaudette, of New London. "We have to save these buildings if we're gonna promote historical sites in the city."
Beaudette and Richard Humphreville are leading the effort to move the home before it was torn down for a parking lot.
"If we can pull this off Tina, we can pull off other ones," Humphreville said.
Many of the beams are now stored behind Humphreville's woodworking shop. Next is the foundation.
"We want to save the top stones."
All the pieces are marked so the home can be put back together.
"If we get many hands chipping in we will reach our goal," Beaudette said.
In addition to satisfaction, each volunteer also gets to take home one of the handmade nails from 1829.
A piece of history for a project which still needs a major piece for completion, a piece of land where the house can find a home.
"A lot of us really care about the city and we want to see it work," said Humphreville.
A fund has been set up through New London Landmarks, so if you're not handy with a hammer or have a piece of land to donate you can still help out.
