STONINGTON, Conn. (AP) — An effort is under way to bring eels back to Stonington's Anguilla Brook.
The Day of New London reports crews this week will remove a stone and earthen dam and replace it downstream with a dam that includes a fish ladder.
The two projects are designed to restore alewife, American eel, brook trout and other fish to the 13-mile stretch of the cold-water brook.
The project is the work of the Nature Conservancy, using $147,000 in funding from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation's Long Island Sound Future's Fund.
The brook is named after the Anguilla rostrata or American eel, but state environmental officials say the dam cut off the eels' migratory route.
