Mashantucket (AP) - A United Auto Workers local says it has reached agreement with Foxwoods Resort Casino for a contract covering 2,500 casino dealers.

If approved, the union said Tuesday, its first contract with the Indian-run casino will raise dealers' wages by 12 percent over two years and establish a fairer distribution of tips. The union says dealers at Foxwoods earn an average of about $35,000 a year in wages and tips.

A spokeswoman for Foxwoods did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

The union says the contract establishes job safety measures such as programs to reduce repetitive stress injuries, an extension of medical leave for workers with serious illnesses for more than six months and a smoke-free work area.
