Ledyard (AP) - Friends of a Ledyard High School football player who collapsed during a game over the weekend gathered at the school to pray for his recovery.

Matthew Buriak, 16, is in critical condition at Connecticut Children's Medical Center in Hartford. Superintendent of Schools Michael Graner says Buriak's condition is related to an illness, not an injury. He would not elaborate.

Buriak's teammates and other friends attended a vigil at the high school Sunday night.

Buriak collapsed Saturday during a junior varsity game at Fitch High School in Groton. Coaches say he caught a pass and was tackled, then collapsed as the team went to huddle after a timeout.

He was rushed to Backus Hospital in Norwich for emergency surgery and transferred to the children's hospital.
