GROTON, Conn. (AP) — Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is visiting the Naval Submarine Base in Groton for ceremonies highlighting improvements made with money from the state and the Navy.

The governor will be on hand for the ribbon-cutting Thursday on a new $36 million pier that was funded by the Navy. During a tour he is also expected to participate in a ceremony marking the completion of a state-funded culinary training center at the base's galley.

The state has been making investments to increase the value of the sub base since it was nearly closed by the U.S. government in 2005.

In recent years Connecticut has committed $50 million for improvements for the submarine industry including new dry-dock facilities at Groton-based contractor Electric Boat.

The base is home to 15 fast-attack submarines.
