NORWICH, Conn. (WTNH) -- Norwich man is in police custody after he barricaded himself inside his home.

Officers were called to 34 Everett Street on Monday night to investigate reports of shots fired. On the scene, officers heard two more gunshots, causing them to establish a perimeter around the home.

Police say they had been called to the home before and determined the incident was the result of a medical condition.

Over 35 police officers were called to the area to help with the standoff, including personnel from  the New London County States Attorney's Office, American Ambulance, members of the East Great Plain Volunteer Fire Department and Salvation Army Canteen Truck.

After a nine hour standoff, the man, who has not been identified, surrendered to police and was taken to the hospital to be evaluated.

Officers then executed a search and seizure warrant and seized seven guns, 12 pounds of gunpowder and over 350 live rounds of ammunition from the home.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.
