Preston, Conn. (WTNH) - A man was under the influence when he crashed into a utility pole, causing that pole to fall onto another vehicle in Preston on Saturday.

The accident happened around 6:30 on Saturday morning, in the area of Stonington Road at Route 2.

According to police, 26-year-old Jay W. Taylor, of 42 Garfield Ave., New London, was traveling east on Stonington Road, when it left the roadway near the Preston town line. Taylor's 2006 Chevy Impala then continued east onto Route 2 in Preston, where it struck a utility pole.

The pole snapped off, falling onto a 2004 Nissan Sentra, which was traveling west on Route 2. The vehicle was driven by 27-year-old Philip S. Ales, of 40 Route 2A, Preston.

Taylor's vehicle sustained major damage and was towed from the scene. Ales' vehicle sustained moderate damage.

Taylor was arrested and charged with operating under the influence, failure to drive right, and traveling too fast. He was released on a $5,000 bond, pending his court date of December 20, 2011.
