STONINGTON, Conn. (WTNH)-- A man is dead from self inflicted injuries after a standoff with Stonington police on Saturday.

Police say they responded to White Rock Road at 7:20 PM, to Paul M. Menard, 52, of Pawcatuck, outside near his car, with a handgun in his hand.

Menard appeared intoxicated and officers began to negotiate with him to put the weapon down so they could assist him.

Menard would not comply with directions and the CT ST Police Emergency Services, as well as Westerly Ambulance and police, were called to the scene.

Police say Menard stayed near his car, getting in and out of it with the gun still in his hand, while they continued to negotiate with him.

At around 8:50 PM, Menard discharged his weapon in his car, resulting in a serious wound. He was transported to Westerly Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The case is still under investigation.
