NORTH STONINGTON, Conn. (WTNH) -- A cast iron turtle stolen from a North Stonington home is getting a helping hand from a neighbor.

That neighbor on Pendleton Hill Road has welded the 1,200 pound statue back together. It was broken in three pieces after police say another neighbor, a teen, stole it and dragged it down the street with a pick up truck.

The owner has told News 8 the statue is an antique 19th century cast iron tortoise of Chinese origin.

Other neighbors are glad to see it is being repaired.

"I'm glad somebody could help. It was a shame for that to go to waste like that," said Bruce Borroughs, of North Stonington. "Just to wreck something and leave it. It would be nice to drive by and see it there again.))

News 8 left a message for the owner to find out if the tortoise would be placed back in his yard on Clarks Falls Road, but we haven't heard back yet.
