NORWICH, Conn. (WTNH) -- The Connecticut state police Major Crimes Unit will investigate whether Norwich police officers were justified in shooting and killing an armed man.
Police got a call Sunday night reporting a man in Laurel Hill Park, waving a gun.
When officers arrived they reported finding a man who was despondent. Police say he refused to obey commands and then he pulled out a gun and pointed it at officers.
"Several officers fired at the gun-wielding subject in self-defense," Norwich Deputy Chief Warren Mocek said in a statement.
The man, later identified as 52-year-old Michael Dugas, of 172 Laurel Hill Ave., died from his injuries at Backus Hospital.
We don't know right now how many officers were involved or how many shots were fired.
State police investigators were still on the scene early Monday morning. State police will investigate and the state's attorney will determine if the officers' actions were justified.
