MYSTIC, Conn. (AP) — A Mystic veteran who served during World War II will soon be honored with replacements for military service medals lost 17 years ago during a family move.
U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney is scheduled to present 11 medals on Wednesday to Arthur Swan, who served in the U.S. Navy from September 1943 to March 1946. A noontime ceremony is planned at the Mystic VFW.
Swan's medals and other mementos from his military service were stored for years in a duffel bag in the family's attic. But when the family moved in 1995, the duffel bag was lost. Swan's relatives recently asked Courtney to help them with replacing the medals.
The honors include the Navy Commendation Medal, World War II Victory Medal, American Defense Civil Service Medal and the Normandy Service Medal.
