New housing project to open for homeless vets

GRISWOLD, Conn. (AP) — A new housing project for homeless and at-risk veterans is opening in Jewett City.

The ribbon-cutting is set for Monday at the facility, which features 18 single-unit dwellings.

It includes renovations to a four-story American Legion building and was completed with funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

U.S. Rep Joe Courtney is to speak at the ceremony. Navy Rear Adm. Richard Breckenridge, the commander of a submarine group at the Groton base, is also expected to attend.

The units for each of the veterans, who once were homeless, have a bedroom with a bathroom and a living room with a kitchenette.
