NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) — New London's City Council has approved a budget that restores money for 25 firefighters and 10 police officers who the mayor had planned to lay off.
The Day of New London reports that the $83 million budget makes cuts elsewhere. It eliminates several jobs, including the position of deputy police chief.
It also includes salary cuts for the city's chief administrative officer, the executive assistant to the mayor and the city's finance director.
One of the jobs saved belongs to Al Mayo, the first African-American to be hired as a city firefighter in more than 30 years. He had graduated from the fire academy last week and received a layoff notice Friday.
