Mold found growing in East Lyme school

East Lyme (WTNH) - There's a potential health situation going on at East Lyme High School after mold was found in classrooms there.

"There has been weird smells and stuff," said Sophomore Amanda Tomaszek.

Non-toxic mold was found in five classrooms in the older section of the high school and at the alternative high school across the street.

The affected classrooms, at the main campus, were in the A-wing where technology and art classes are held. They were all cleaned but two remain closed.

"My photo class is in one of the rooms that had the mold and my teacher...she's allergic to the smell of it so we have to go to the library for class," said Sophomore Monica Spencer.

It's not ideal but the school is dealing with the problem.

The affected rooms and the ventilation systems are all being scrubbed clean, the walls and ceilings will all be painted with mold killing primer and paint and permanent dehumidifiers will be installed.

"Those dehumidifiers will work based on humidity of the room. They will turn themselves on and off as soon as the humidity rises to a certain level because we know that mold grows as it gets more humid in the space," said Superintendent of Schools Dr. James Lombardo.

Most of the students aren't affected by the moldy start to school and the ones News Channel 8 spoke to aren't too worried about it.

"We know that the school will control it and take care of it and won't really affect us," said Tomaszek.
