Killingly (WTNH) - A Killingly man has truck that runs on wood, leaves and trash.

Dave Nichols' truck does not burn the trash, it is gasified using extreme heat and little or no oxygen.

"We're basically breaking the wood down chemically and we're basically creating a material fuel that the engine can burn in the form of hydro-carbons," Nichols said.

Using his background in engineering and chemistry, Nichols designed the biomass gasification system which sends vaporized gas through condensers to cool it.

"And then it goes to the engine with the engine thinking it's burning gasoline," he explained.

You do need to fill up a little more often though with this fuel.

"The nice thing about my fill ups is they're free," Nichols said.

Nichols says the truck does run cleaner than those powered by gas.

"This vehicle has the same carbon footprint as you or I," he said.

He says only carbon dioxide and water leave this tailpipe.
