Norwich, Conn. (WTNH) - Many residents in Norwich are not happy to hear about the downtown post office shutting down.

The city received a letter outlining that intent, which has a lot of people around here upset. Not only are there more than six hundred post office boxes in this building, but there are a lot of people who live in the downtown area who might not have other transportation might have to take a bus like that just to get anywhere in the city.

The plan is to move the window service from this post office to an Annex facility which is on the outskirts of the city toward the Bozrah border but a lot of people who live in the downtown area and the businesses and the offices they all use this and say they will miss this convenience.

"A lot of locals here. Probably be very trying for them they'd probably have to take public transportation just to mail a letter," said Robert Dawson of Norwich.

"This would be really bad, I would think so," said Maria Aponte of Norwich.

The city certainly understands why the U.S. Postal Service would want to sell the 23-thousand square foot building in order to save money, but it also hopes the postal service will understand the importance of having some type of window service here in the downtown area even if it's in a smaller facility.

The city leaders plan to take action to hopefully get the U. S. Postal Service to keep some type of window service in the area.
