NORWICH, Conn. (AP) — Volunteers in Norwich are reconstructing an early 20th century trolley system to promote tourism and downtown business.
The Norwich Bulletin reports that work began in 2010 on the battery-powered trolley when American Ambulance donated the chassis of a vehicle it was planning to retire.
Numerous local companies and schools have since offered help.
Norwich Rotary's electric trolley is expected to be turned over to the city in May. At the same time, officials will celebrate the opening of Green Energy Technologies, an employee-owned company that will build other trolleys.
The 10-passenger trolley is seen as a way to shuttle visitors from the waterfront to downtown Norwich's business district during events.
Norwich was home to a 21-mile trolley system that linked the city with Westerly from 1906 through 1922.
