Montville, Conn. (WTNH) -- It's not uncommon for kids to run around and play in the woods, but on Sunday that fun was interrupted when a group of kids made a disturbing discovery .
A woman's skull and other bones were found along Oxoboxo Dam Road, in the Oakdale section of Montville.
A rib cage and other bones were clearly visible, only partially hidden under some leaves. That area has now been cleared and examined by a team of investigators.
News 8 is told some personal belongings were found near the skeletal remains.
"In a sense it's a good thing they found the remains," said Agnes Previtera, "but now it's got to get solved.
When asked if she would say it was almost fortunate that the children found the bones Previtera replied, "well sure, somebody's got heartache somewhere."
State Police believe the body has been in the woods for about a year. However, they are looking at missing person's cases from as far back as 2006, which is when Erika Cirioni went missing after leaving for a New Year's Eve celebration in Norwich.
News 8 left a message for her mother who reportedly provided DNA samples and dental records from the young mother. The state medical examiner is examining the remains. State police say no identity has been determined.
"There are loved ones right," questioned Previtera. "Would like to put them where they belong, not here out in the woods."
Not only is the area a popular place for kids to play, but it's also a popular place for people to dump some of their garbage. Some wonder if the remains were in the area the whole time or if they were placed there more recently.
