Stacking the odds against CT casinos

(WTNH) -- Voters in Rhode Island may have stacked the odds against casinos in Connecticut.

Most everything about a casino revolves around gambling. Games of chance bring in the bulk of the business, but now the odds may be stacked against the house because of increased casino competition. Twin Rivers in Rhode Island has been given the go-ahead from voters to add table games.

"It's gonna help them out," said Michael Hewitt. "But as far as Connecticut it's probably going to take away from some of the people coming over here."

Hewitt, who lives across the street from Mohegan Sun, already goes to Twin Rivers to play the slots. He says Connecticut casinos need to step up their game to keep people coming now that Rhode Island will soon also offer poker and black jack.

"Instead of sending you a five or $10 gift card or something like that throw out a $20 bill," Hewitt said. "You'd be surprised for $20 people would come out and do the things that you'd be amazed for $20."

The President and CEO of Foxwoods says "we are prepared for the introduction of tables games in Rhode Island. We are already spending a lot of time bolstering our other amenities like our retail, and food and beverage offerings."

Mohegan Sun doesn't expect to see any big impact on its black jack or poker revenues. In fact, it has been anticipating this added competition.

In Rhode Island as well as Massachusetts where it is hoping to open its own casino. Both Connecticut casinos have diversified their offerings to appeal to more people.

"It may be in the best interest of Foxwoods and Mohegan to let people win a little more when they first open up," said Jerald Johns, of Norwich.

Johns tells News 8 increasing customer odds is a sure bet.
