GRISWOLD, Conn. (WTNH) -- An early morning fire in Griswold has left two people dead, police say.

Multiple 911 calls came in approximately 4:13 a.m. Sunday, reporting a structure fire at 39 Tatro Road.

Firefighters arrived on the scene and suppressed a fire in single family home. Although initially unaccounted for, officials did locate two deceased victims within the building.

"It was well-engulfed in flames this morning and so the risk factor for our first responders was more than usual," said First Selectman Philip Anthony.

Anthony says those firefighters, who are second to none, had the grim task of trying to recover the bodies of Wayne and Linda Guyette from their now completely destroyed home.

A balloon and flowers marking their loss. Their son who was initially feared lost to this fire was not home when tragedy struck.

He, along with family and friends, came to what was left of the Tatro Road home trying the deal with the magnitude of this loss.

Those who walked by said of the Guyettes, "They were much-loved." A close-knit neighborhood and community whose hearts go out to this well known and well respected family.

"We're a close-knit town. We're very tight with each other and any tragedy such as this rallies our residents," said Anthony. "Our history speaks for itself."

The cause of death will be determined following a post-mortem examination.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is taking place.
