Old Lyme, Conn. (WTNH) - Trains were delayed after an Amtrak train struck and killed a man in Old Lyme.
Amtrak's Northeast Regional Train 137 from Boston to Wasington, D.C. struck and fatally injured a man around 3:30 p.m. near Shore Road.
The identity of the victim has not been released, but he's reportedly 21 years old. Police say he may have jumped off the rock ledge onto the tracks.
"Have no idea, don't know if he was on the ledge and fell, or if he was on the tracks and got hit, I, we don't know anything," said Rose Saunders of Old Lyme.
Saunders heard of the accident on her scanners and went to the area to check it out, but said she couldn't get close.
"It's a bad spot. It's all rock ledge and it's, the train trestle is like a bridge going through, and it's just a sad situation for someone to be in an area with the train coming through," said Saunders.
None of the trains 315 passengers or crew members reported any injuries as a result of the crash.
Train delays began when officer arrived on the scene to conduct an investigation into the incident.
"Very sad, I feel really bad for the family of whomever it might be," said Saunders.
It is not known at this time if this was an unfortunate accident, or if the man committed suicide.
Amtrak passengers dealt with delays on Northeast Corridor travel between Boston and New Haven. Additionally, Shoreline East service was also temporarily suspended. Amtrak attempted to secure alternate bus transportation for Shore Line East service between New London and Old Saybrook only.
All services were restored around 7 p.m.
