GROTON, Conn. (AP) - Laboratories are set to open at the University of Connecticut's Avery Point campus by the end of April to provide equipment and other support to start-up science and technology companies.
The Day of New London reports that one biology lab and four chemistry labs are being completed at a cost of $1 million.
About 2,000 square feet of renovated labs and 1,000 square feet of office space will be made available as part of UConn's Technology Incubation Program. It provides low-cost space to start-up companies, particularly those trying to develop marine applications.
Four of the five companies using older incubator space at Avery Point were started by former employees of Pfizer. The New York-based pharmaceutical company has laid off scientists as it leaves certain therapeutic areas and downsizes.
