GROTON, Conn. (WTNH) -- A veterans day celebration in a community steep in military tradition. Those who served joined students at Mary Morrison Elementary for a day of sharing and learning.

Enthusiasm met experience Friday.

"It was a very inspiring time for me to be here to watch the young children and the way they sing," said Jim Mosley, submarine veteran.

Veterans Day at Mary Morrison Elementary in Groton may be more enlightening and inspiring than others.

"We have a great country and we have to be ready to defend it," said Ken Vining, submarine veteran, "and there's a lot of people around that would be over here in a minute if we weren't strong."

Veterans shared their experiences and personal stories with students, many of whom also know the sacrifices and benefits of military life.

"If dad or mom is out to sea somebody else steps in and they're there as a community," said Lauren Atkinson, Navy veteran.

Atkinson is the daughter of a submariner and a Navy veteran herself. Her son is a student at the school.

"He was very proud," Atkinson said. "He thought it was a lot cooler to have the guys here though."

Those guys were answering questions about their silent service.

"One of my questions that my teacher told me I could ask is like how many awards did they win," said third grader Cole Horne.

While the students were able to ask the veterans questions in person, just down the hall fourth graders were also writing letters to sailors on the USS Hartford. Also asking questions and developing a pen pal relationship.

Perhaps it's the question posed to one student which shows the success of the day.

"What does Veterans Day mean to you," asked News 8's Tina Detelj.

"Celebrating those who fought for our freedom," Cole replied.

A thanks for their service.
