Would you be ready if a hurricane were to hit?

GROTON, Conn. (WTNH) -- If a hurricane were to strike Connecticut this season, would you be prepared?

The high seas and powerful winds, which came ashore during Tropical Storm Irene blew in destruction all along the shoreline. At Noank Shipyard, the seawall, along with some ramps and docks were damaged.

"Are you guys ready for the next hurricane," asked News 8's Tina Detelj.

"Well we learned a lot from Irene," said Kathleen Burns, Noank Shipyard.

Communication is key.

Burn's plan is for storm preps, not hurricane preps.

"A dock beginning with these slip numbers they would be on an initial evacuation because these are the most exposed areas."

Most of the damage suffered has been from unnamed storms like the one which hit in March 2010, knocking down power lines, dislodging docks, ripping off roof shingles, and blowing out Plexiglas panels at Costello's Clam Shack.

"We found them broken here on the ground, here is a piece of one."

"We recorded 72 miles an hour here, so that's hurricane force," said Burns.

"Is it too early to think about hurricanes," asked Detelj.

"No it's never too early," said boat owner Bob Mackler, "as a boater you always have to keep an eye on the weather."

During Irene, Costello's Clam Shack actually didn't suffer any damage because folks there were able to take down the awnings and anything else which might blow away. However, the storm did end the season early because it really just wasn't worth setting everything back up for that one last week before Labor Day.

It's a way of life along the shoreline.

"Do I have enough fenders, will I have enough lines, should I be taking down my windage items," Burns said.
