Greenwich (AP) - A federal environmental official says a 28 million gallon sewage spill in Greenwich earlier this month was one of the largest in recent memory in New England.
Greenwich officials recently submitted a report detailing the Dec. 12 sewer main break and the size of the spill to federal and state regulators.
Michael Fedak has been with the federal Environmental Protection Agency for 30 years. He says he can recall only two other spills of similar magnitude in the region, in Wethersfield and in Worcester, Mass.
Officials aren't sure what caused the Greenwich spill, which sent untreated wastewater into the Mianus River and Long Island Sound for four days.
Shellfish beds in the area remain closed, but officials say there won't be any long-term damage to Long Island Sound.
