Hartford (AP) - Dozens of trained dogs used by Connecticut State Police troopers are getting specialized tracking microchips.

The American Kennel Club is donating the devices for the K-9 dogs, who will have the microchips embedded under their skin. Each chip contains a unique ID code that can be read by a scanner in case the dog is lost.

The AKC announced the donation Thursday in a ceremony at the state Capitol with several of the state police's approximately 80 K-9 dogs.

The group also honored "Peaches," a 5-month-old German shepherd owned by West Hartford residents Tom and Anne Decker. The dog recently became the 4 millionth dog nationwide enrolled in the AKC's pet recovery service.
