Waterbury (AP) - Waterbury Hospital says it will cut about 10 percent of its work force, the equivalent of 160 full-time positions, by the end of September.

The hospital says some jobs will be eliminated by attrition and leaving vacant spots open, but that an undetermined number of layoffs also is expected.

It reported an $8.5 million lost for its last budget year, almost double the $4.3 million loss it absorbed in the previous fiscal year.

The hospital's parent, the Greater Waterbury Health Network, reported a loss last year of $17.8 million -- more than triple the previous year's loss.

Officials say the collapse of national financial markets last fall is a large factor because it dramatically reduced the organization's investment income.
