New Haven (WTNH) - Commuters and residents have had to deal with snow, slush and ice all day Wednesday. And although the weather is calming down a bit, people are still feeling the effects.
The conditions caused numerous problems on the roadways all over the state. A tractor trailer jackknifed on I-91 in Wallingford and another on I-84 in Ashford. There were reports of downed trees that closed the Merritt Parkway in Greenwich as well as reports of spinoffs everywhere.
From white to wet, they saw it all during the morning commute in Hamden.
"It's like a little bit of snow and then rain and sleet on top of it, and that made it a little tough going," said Justin Grimsley of Cheshire.
The good news was that state and local road crews were out plowing and treating the roads all night so most roads were passable - if you were careful.
"It's pretty much not as icy as they said it was going to be. A little snow and a little ice," said Mike Natrillo of Cheshire.
"As you go North it gets worse, but the main roads aren't too bad. Gotta go slow, though," said Phil Scarinci of Hamden.
People plowing the roads had a tough time too.
"It's really not snow outside. It's really not snow, it's ice, so it's very hard to plow. I don't know if you guys can look. We try to plow and we can not pick anything up," said Roberto Carrasco, plow truck driver.
If anything, plowing seemed to make things worse, getting rid of the slush, leaving just ice behind.
"We're going to have to use a lot of sand, and be very careful when we're driving today because it's going to be dangerous out there," Carrasco said.
The storm has also knocked out power to thousands in the state. United Illuminating is reporting around 400 outages, mainly in Shelton and Trumbull. CL&P is reporting over 9,500 outages.
Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks is open, but there are flight delays and cancellations. You're urged to call ahead to your airline to find out the status of your flight.
