East Haven (WTNH) - There are several Latino oriented businesses along East Haven's Main Street. The owner of Gutiz Bakery said his Hispanic customers fear police will stop them as soon as they leave the store.
"If a person walking out of the store is Hispanic, they will be stopped before than even get in the drivers seat," Pedro Gutierrez said.
Gutierrez and other business owners held a press conference claiming East Haven police are profiling members of the Latino community and their stories prove it.
"When we pulled into the restaurant he put on his lights and pulled us over for no reason," John Espinoza, of East Haven, said.
The East Haven Police Department say no group is targeted. The allegations come after the arrest of Father James Manship, a pastor of a predominantly Hispanic parish.
Today he released a video he was recording just moments before he was led away in handcuffs. The priest claims it proves he didn't interfere with police but was just trying to document what he calls the harassment of Latino businesses.
"Instead of keeping this hidden now, we are all sharing our experiences and we will document these stories," said Rev. Manship, Pastor of St. Rosa of Lima Church.
Mayor April Capone Almon called the allegations serious but points out no official complaints have been filed.
"Again, without any substantiated detailed proof...but we will handle in house," she said.
