Hebron (WTNH) - Vandals caused extensive damage at a Hebron camp that gives kids
from the city a taste of the country life.
The vandalism was discovered by the caretaker of Camp Hi Hoti
today. More than half a dozen buildings were hit, from the lodge,
to the dining hall, to the art center and the bunk houses. The
vandals even broke into the garage and put the lawn tractor into
the pool.
"Every last window in the lodge has been busted open, it's like,
over 50 windows. The walls were kicked in, the arts and craft
building has been destroyed," said Lynn Ford, Hartford Neighborhood
Centers.
Not only did the vandals smash windows, they also discharged
fire extinguishers in the buildings.
"I was very emotional. I couldn't believe it, knowing the kids
that we service. Who would do something like this," Ford said.
Several baseball bats were recovered, believed to be the weapons
that knocked out the windows. The State Police Major Crime Squad
has been called in to investigate and they have developed several
good leads.
Ford says the damage is so extensive that the camp may not be
able to open this summer.
"We word hard every day to get the funding to get the kids out
here. Times are tough right now and with the expenses coming from
this we don't know if we are going to be able to open the camp,"
she said.
