Man arrested in bar stabbing death

Waterbury police arrested a man who they said fatally stabbed an acquaintance in a bar early this morning.

22-year-old James Battista faces murder charges in the death of Ralph Pepe, also 22, of Wallingford.

Police said around 12:30 this morning at Mario's Cafe on Bank Street, Battista stabbed Pepe several times in the chest after an argument.

Pepe later died at Waterbury Hospital .

Several people witnessed the stabbing, and police were able to recover the weapon involved and video surveillance.

Police said when they later confronted Battista, he confessed to the stabbing.

Battista is being held on $1,000,000 bond, and is due Monday in Waterbury Superior Court. Police said they will continue to investigate the incident.
