Police have taken a driver into custody after a hit-and-run in Bridgeport this morning that sent a mother and her 18-month-old child to the hospital.

The incident happened at Washington and Park Avenues around 6:45 a.m. According to Bridgeport police, a silver pick-up truck was heading South on Park, then took a sharp left onto Washington where it struck a mother and child who were crossing the street.

"I see the young lady every morning walk by with here baby," said Danny Coleman, who has watched the woman cross there every day, but missed the incident by moments. "I guess she be going to drop the baby off so she can go to work. And this morning I saw the stroller in the street and I said well, I know who that is."

Police say a witness followed the suspect vehicle and gave police a description license plate information.

The suspect truck was stopped at the Pilot truck stop in Milford, where the driver was taken into custody.

The mother and child are reported in stable condition at Bridgeport Hospital. Their names were not yet made available.

Police have not released the name of the pick-up truck driver.
