New Haven (WTNH) - The winter weather has taken its toll on roads in New Haven and other cities and towns in the form of potholes.
It is a vicious seasonal cycle as melting snow seeps into cracks in the road, freezes and expands. Suddenly, potholes are popping up all over.
"They're terrible, terrible, especially on Quinnipiac and Eastern Street, terrible," said Anthony D'Agostino of New Haven.
News Channel 8 went and checked out Quinnipiac in New Haven, and there they were.
"I went through three tires already, inside the potholes just popping tires," D'Agostino said.
Some manage to swerve around easily while others simply hit them head-on.
"It doesn't really matter how fast or slow you go, your car's just all over the place," said Dayne Jakes of Middletown.
"We actually talk about it all the time because it kills your car, it kills your tires," said Elissa Johnson of North Branford.
But as much as drivers complain, very few actually take the steps necessary to get the potholes fixed. News Channel 8 couldn't find anyone who's actually made a phone call to the city or the Department of Public Works.
"Me, personally, I haven't, I'm not really around here enough to where it really affects me," Jakes said.
"Once I'm off of 'em I don't think about it so it's you know, I never even thought about doing that," said Johnson.
In fact, the DPW says, they've only received three phone calls about potholes in the past two weeks. But with winter weather on the way, no potholes can be addressed until sometime next week. With the snow, the ice and the plows, there's sure to be many more by then.
New Haven's Pothole Hotline is 203-946-7700. To report a pothole in your town you should contact the local Public Works Department.
There is also a web site for reporting any kind of nuisance issue at seeclickfix.com . The site was created by a team in New Haven, but it allows people anywhere in the U.S. to post issues they see in their community.
