North Stonington (WTNH) - Besides the mess it makes of the roads, another danger of
freezing rain is the power outages. And there were plenty of them
all over the state. Power crews are making progress. Connecticut
Light and Power (CL&P) is reporting outages around the state.
Hundreds of them are along the eastern shoreline.
As the rain drops fall, so do the tree branches. CL&P crews
are a welcome sight for Theralene VanDine, of Stonington. Her power
went out while she was still asleep.
"When I got up, my stove was not lit up and that's the first
thing," Theralene said. "I go to turn the stove on, to get a cup of
coffee."
But, for Theralene, there was no coffee, no lights, no heat. "I
dress in layers," she said.
There was also no baking of the cookies she was hoping to make
this afternoon.
Detelj: "A little bit of an inconvenience not having your
power?"
Theralene: "Oh yes, it always is when you don't have it cause
then you can think of all the things you should be doing."
By Wednesday afternoon, nearly 40 percent of the CL&P
customers in North Stonington were without power and crews were out
in full force chasing after downed power lines and trees coated in
ice and collapsing under its weight.
In North Stonington, there are actually several sets of crews
roaming around town. Some are restoring power and others are
looking for trees to trim back to prevent more outages.
Meanwhile folks like Theralene wait and hope that their heat and
lights come back on before they are really left in the dark. Even
as sunset approaches, she still manages to look on the bright
side.
"At least we're not in the mountains somewhere and they're
waiting to come and get us and lift us off somewhere," Theralene
said.
