(WTNH) - Some state lawmakers want UConn basketball coach Jim Calhoun
reprimanded for comments he made at a news conference last week,
but the coach himself says his comments were "misinterpreted".
At a post-game news conference on Saturday, blogger Ken Krayeske
asked Calhoun, the highest paid state employee, if he should return
some of his $1.6 million salary.
Calhoun went on a rant, saying in part, "you're not that stupid
are you? My best advice to you is to shut up...."
In a statement released late Thursday night Calhoun said "It has
become clear that my comments have been misinterpreted by some as
being insensitive to the current economic climate that those of us
around our country and here in Connecticut are all facing."
The language and attitude Calhoun demonstrated Saturday is what
state Senator Mary Ann Handley of Manchester and state Rep. Roberta
Willis of Lakeville believe is unacceptable.
The lawmakers Thursday said the university needs to take "the
appropriate disciplinary action to reinforce the high ethical
standards we have come to expect from our flagship
institution."
"I believe I have a duty, responsibility and obligation to
support the state I love and the many people and organizations of
Connecticut that are in need," Calhoun said in his statement.
Both UConn President Michael Hogan and Athletic Director Jeff
Hathaway have publicly stated they have spoken numerous times with
Coach Calhoun. Each says they support Calhoun and they believe all
members of the UConn community will treat others
professionally.
"I can assure you that we will continue to encourage all members
of the UConn community to resist temptation and treat others in a
judicious and respectful manner, no matter what the circumstances,"
Hogan said in a statement.
