Washington (WTNH/AP) - A 12-year-old from Darien was knocked out in the third round of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, but two others from Connecticut successfully made it into the next round.
Kyra Gardner misspelled the word "aiguille" and was eliminated.
Two others from Connecticut, Rahul Malayappan , 9, of Danbury, and Aaron Rabinowitz , 14, of Orange, remain in the competition.
Malayappan has correctly spelled "deficiency" and "torrone" in Wednesday's oral part of the competition.
Rabinowitz spelled "cater" and "sostenuto" correctly.
A record 293 spellers -- including one from China -- took part in the 82nd annual bee, which culminates with a nationally televised finish Thursday night.
Malayappan, Gardner and Rabinowitz took part in the written test Tuesday and correctly spelled their first word in the second round Wednesday.
The winner gets more than $40,000 in cash and prizes.
