Middletown (WTNH) - Johanna Justin-Jinich, the Wesleyan University junior fatally shot yesterday, filed a harassment complainment against suspected gunman Stephen Morgan when they were both enrolled in a summer course at New York University, said officials.

NYU says in 2007, Justin-Jinich and Morgan were both enrolled in the same six-week summer-session course. Both were also residents in student housing at the time, but did not live in the same residence hall.

NYU's Public Safety Department says near the end of the course, Justin-Jinich filed the harassment complaint, saying she had been receiving harassing e-mails and phone calls from Morgan.

The NYPD interviewed both Justin-Jinich and Morgan. NYU's Public Safety Department says after they tried to follow up with Justin-Jinich, she declined to pursue the case.

“The NYU community is saddened by the senseless death of this young woman, and we extend our deepest sympathies to Johanna’s family, loved ones, and friends,” the university stated in a press release.

A nationwide manhunt is on for Morgan, 29, who may also have ties to Colorado and Massachusetts. In a press conference Thursday morning, police said Morgan may be targeting the university and the Jewish community.

Wesleyan instructed students to "remain inside their residences and to remain vigilant" Thursday as police continue to search for Morgan.

Justin-Jinich was shot at the Red and Black Café inside the bookstore around 1:00 Wednesday afternoon in front of several witnesses. She worked at the cafe. She was rushed to nearby Middlesex Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
