Mother's Day gift for unemployed

West Haven (WTNH) - If you've fallen on hard times you may still be able to give your mom a sparkling Mother's Day gift thanks to the generosity of a West Haven jewelry store.

Cellini Design Jewelers is giving away free gifts for Mother's Day for those who are out of work.

"It's giving back to the public. It's giving to the people who are having such a hard time," Jean Bengiveango said. "It's Mother's Day. What better time to do something generous and wonderful?"

The 60-year family business is giving fresh water pearl gift sets to those who are out of work, who in turn give it to the mother in their life. It could be a necklace, a bracelet, earrings or a heart and earring set. Each is worth about fifty dollars.

In order to pull a gold wrapped box out of a basket sitting on the counter you'll have to show proof of hardship, specifically the stub from an unemployment check. Some folks have already taken advantage of the jewelry giveaway.

"She was just laid off and so she wanted to get something for her mom because this year she is not able to," Bengiveango said. "We had a gentleman who came who just lost his job and just wasn't able to get something for his wife with his children."

There is a limited supply of just 100 boxes, so once the basket is empty the giveaway is over.

"What is important is the idea of teaching your children giving is a good thing," Bengiveango said.

The jewelry store is expecting a lot of folks at its door Wednesday. The event runs through the end of the week or until the gifts run out.

Cellini Design Jewelers is located at 560 Forest Road in West Haven.
