Wethersfield (WTNH) - If you tried to log on to Connecticut's Department of Labor
website today, chances are you had a tough time. The website had a
meltdown as thousands tried to file for unemployment
extensions.
Computer technicians at the State Department of Labor are
playing traffic cop, moving users around to different servers at
the department's state headquarters in Wethersfield.
"We are still experiencing slow periods," Tracey Jackson, D.O.L.
IT Director, said. "We have diverted all of our resources that we
can to resolve the problem and it is getting better."
Thousands of people attempted to file for the additional federal
unemployment benefits starting at 7 a.m. Tuesday morning.
"We just didn't know that so many people would be coming at one
time," Nancy Steffens, of CT Department of Labor, said. "It did
surprise us. However, we were ready. We had technicians on board
here."
They have been working throughout the day and are expected to
continue working all night.
The agency reports telephone volume, which was already heavy,
picked up a little more because people who did get online wanted to
be sure their filing got through.
"We just ask people be patient during this process because it
does take some time to resolve these issues," Jackson said.
