Nyberg: Helping young women understand their power

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- When you move to a new country as a teenager it can be devastating because you don't fit in. Karen Hinds of Waterbury, came to America from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and had to figure it out.

She's now teaching others through her consulting company to embrace their diversity. She wants young women especially to understand their power.

"I saw that women were really getting lost and it's important for women to understand what they bring to the table," she said. "It's important for them to know how powerful they are, but not to try and be superwoman. I really believe that superwoman is not attainable. What do women bring to the table, in particular this table, do they not understand the power that they have? They don't understand the power because they're trying to be like men and we don't need to do that.

"I think as women we shape the world in different ways. Some shape the world by being at home and taking care of the family. Some shape the world by being out in the marketplace. But understand what works for you. Don't try to have it all at one time because that's not possible if you plan to be effective."

Hinds tells young people to find a mentor.

She'll be holding her first global conference for women on her native island next year.
