Branford, Conn. (WTNH) - Branford police are investigating the deadly shooting of a Yale doctor outside his home, and a man from Beijing, China, has been charged with the doctor's murder.
The victim has been identified as Dr. Vajinder Toor. Toor, 34, was a fellow at Yale School of Medicine. Police say he was shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooting happened on Blueberry Lane at The Meadows condominium complex just before 8:00 a.m.
The suspect was identified as Lishan Wang, whose last known address was in Marietta, Georgia. Wang is from Beijing. He was being held on a $2 million bond.
"Our agency is looking at a number of motives for this homicide," Chief John DeCarlo said in a statement. "One is the possibility that Dr. Toor and Lishan Wang had a previous working relationship at a hospital in New York. We are unsure of the extent of their interactions at this time."
A hospital employee told The Associated Press that Wang and Toor were involved in a confrontation a few years ago at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center after Wang left his post at the intensive care unit and was not reachable for a few hours. The employee said Toor reprimanded him and that Wang threatened Toor in front of other employees.
Branford police say Wang also fired shots at Toor's wife but she was not hit.
Branford police credit neighbors at the condo complex for quickly calling 9-1-1 and giving a description of the getaway car, which led to the arrest of the suspect. He was apprehended near I-95 on Brushy Plains Road.
"Evidence in plain view within the vehicle preliminarily linked the suspect to the shooting," Lt. Geoff Morgan said.
Wang will be charged with murder, criminal attempt to commit murder and other crimes.
Chief DeCarlo said the shooting has no connection to the Yale community.
The Yale Daily News reports that counceling was made available on Thursday for collegues of Dr. Toor.
