44 bills on driving and transportation considered

(WTNH) --The general assembly's Transportation Committee is looking for public input today on a variety of bills that would impact how you travel, what's on the road, and what you can do in your car.

Among the 44 bills on the committee's agenda :

• A proposal that would make it illegal to smoke in your car with kids under the age of seven. The proposal calls for violators to get a warning first and then be ticketed and fined after that. [story]
• A proposal to require inspections on all cars with more than 100,000 miles. [link]
• A proposal to allow any vehicle to use the high occupancy vehicle lanes during the afternoon rush hour. [link]
• A proposal to require insurance and registration for mopeds. [link]
• A proposal to allow golf carts or other certain three-wheeled vehicles on local roads [link]
• Lifetime parking permits for people with permanent disabilities [link]

The committee is also weighing whether the state should issue special Sandy Hook Promise license plates. The bill calls for any proceeds from the sale of the plates go to the Sandy Hook Promise non-profit fund. [link]

The committee meets at 10:00 a.m. at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford. The public hearing begins at 10:30.
