WESTPORT, Conn. (AP) — The Westport police department is reminding people to keep their hands off neighbors' campaign signs.

The department said Tuesday that only a couple of complaints have been formally filed, but it has been receiving a number of phone calls from people complaining about stolen signs.

Police Chief Dale Call said in a written statement that anyone caught taking a campaign sign will be subject to criminal arrest. He said in a statement that "a better way to indicate a person's voting preference is at the polls."

Yard signs are proliferating across the state in the final weeks before the Nov. 6 elections.
