Accidental election winner resigns

DERBY, Conn. (CT Post) - James J. Butler, who never sought the position, has resigned from the city's Board of Apportionment and Taxation .

Butler was sworn into office Saturday, but it's not the James Butler who sought re-election to the city's Board of Apportionment and Taxation. His father, James R. Butler , an incumbent board member, was the one who wanted to be re-elected to the position.

The snafu began in late November, when Tony Szewczyk , the city's Republican Party chairman, alerted City Clerk Laura Wabno that the Nov. 8 election ballot contained the name James J. Butler, rather than James R. Butler. The mistake was made by Sheila Parizo, the city's Democratic Town Committee chairwoman who said she put the wrong middle initial on the certificate of endorsement.

"The town committee never intended to put James J. Butler on the ballot,'' she said.
