Company moves into historic Colt Armory

HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) -- It is a ray of hope in the Capitol city as the very first commercial tenant has moved into the historic "Colt Armory" and they are hiring.

It's been the dream of city and state planners for years that the iconic Colt Armory alongside I-91 and the Connecticut River could one day again be a center of activity and jobs.

Dale is one of the twenty customer services employees that's moved into the rehabed Colt South Armory building with about 80 others at 'Foley Carrier Services.'

This part of the armory was built in 1916. Weapons for the first world war were built on this floor and now these employees are helping their more than 30-thousand clients around the country.

Virtually everything in your home or business came by truck and the companies that operate all those trucks employ thousands of drivers but it's all tightly regulated by the federal government.

"We can help them maneuver their drug and alcohol testing, help then with their paperwork. Some of it sounds simple like paperwork but it's a matter of life and death for their company if they mess it up. They can be in big trouble," Alex Rose of Foley Carrier Services said.

The rule book is about an inch thick and full of dangerous curves. Foley guides the trucking and transporation industry through all of them and this space in the old Armory was perfect for them for many reasons.

"We have a growing customer base of Latinos. Being able to recruit more Spanish, Bi-lingual people, also became a priority." David Wendell said.

"This is an important milestone that we're marking in this complex. This is the big commercial, for profit tenant that we wanted to attract to this siste for some period of time." Gov. Malloy said.

They have openings, they're willing to train and they are especially looking for Spanish bi-lingual applicants.
