Conn. governor's budget boosts education spending

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Gov. Dannel P. Malloy says his new, two-year state budget proposal will include "a lot" of education funding, including an additional $14.1 million to help low-performing schools.

The Democrat announced Friday that the extra funding, spread out over two years, will allow more schools to participate in The Commissioner's Network. That's a program enacted last year to help struggling schools come up with plans to improve student performance.

Malloy is scheduled to unveil his new budget to the General Assembly on Wednesday.

He told reporters there will be no new taxes in the proposal. However, he hasn't ruled out extending some taxes that are poised to expire.

Malloy said his budget plan is balanced in both fiscal years. Each year has been projected to be more than $1 billion in deficit.
