HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The adage that every vote counts is being proven in a primary for a Connecticut legislative seat.

Secretary of the State Denise Merrill's office announced Tuesday that a recount shows Leo Canty won the primary for the 5th state representative district with 774 votes. Runner-up Brandon McGee garnered 773 votes while Donald Trinks had 267 votes.

The initial result after the Aug. 14 primary showed a tie between Canty and McGee.

The district includes parts of Hartford and Windsor. The Hartford recount was held Tuesday while the Windsor recount was held Friday.

Deputy Secretary of the State James Spallone said the office declared the vote based on documents provided by the local election moderators. He said other parties could challenge the results in court if they choose to do so.
